How to Choose the Right Carpet Size for Your Room

A carpet can pull a whole room together, but only if the size is right. Too small and it looks like a lost doormat. Too big and it swallows the floor. Here’s a simple way to choose, using the three sizes most Indian homes need: 3 x 5 ft, 4 x 6 ft and 5 x 7 ft.

Step 1: Measure before you shop

Take a measuring tape and note the length and width of the area you want to cover, not the whole room. A useful trick is to mark the shape on the floor with newspaper or masking tape and live with it for a day. You’ll quickly see whether it feels too big or too small.

Step 2: Match the size to the room

3 x 5 ft: small spaces and accents

  • In front of a sofa in a compact living room or flat
  • Beside a bed, so your feet land on something soft
  • In a pooja corner, study nook or kids’ play area

4 x 6 ft: the everyday all-rounder

  • Under a coffee table with a 2- or 3-seater sofa
  • At the foot of a single or small double bed
  • In a bedroom where you want colour without covering the whole floor

5 x 7 ft: anchor a seating area

  • In a medium to large living room, with the front legs of the sofa and chairs resting on it
  • Under the lower two-thirds of a queen or king bed
  • Under a small 4-seater dining table. Leave enough room for chairs to slide out without catching the edge.

Step 3: Follow the “legs” rule

In a living room, a carpet looks best when at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs sit on it. This connects the furniture into one group. If even the front legs can’t reach, choose a smaller carpet and centre it under the coffee table instead, so it looks intentional.

Step 4: Leave a border of floor

Try to leave roughly 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) of bare floor between the carpet and the walls. That frame of floor makes a room feel bigger and lets the carpet’s design stand out.

Pick a design that suits the room

  • Traditional Persian-style medallions in red and gold add warmth to living rooms with wooden furniture.
  • Softer tones like cream, tan or grey work well in smaller rooms and keep them feeling airy.
  • Playful prints are perfect for kids’ rooms. Pick a washable carpet, because spills will happen.

Don’t forget practicality

On tiled or marble floors, an anti-slip backing stops the carpet from sliding and bunching. And with dust, monsoon mud and festival guests, a machine-washable carpet saves a lot of trouble.
